Healthy Competion vs. Obsession with Winning

For those that have known me almost my whole life, they'd say I'm obsessed with winning. But for those that have only known me in my adulthood, would say that I'm just a nut and easy-going either way.

Obviously, it takes a while to get to know me. What is it with winning that makes us feel validated? Why can't we be content with just doing the things we love? Today, I signed up my youngest in Basketball. They don't keep score, nobody looses, "everyone wins". Really???!!! Are they kidding? No wonder we live a C- society. UGH. I want my children to know it takes work to be successful. If we bring them up with medals for pretty smiles, they are going to expect that when they grow up. And what a harsh dose of reality that will be. I had no choice, signed him up anyway. LOL

How does this pertain to horses? Well, I saw a video of horses playing soccer about a month ago. Decided that would be fun to teach our horses. Purchased the ball and started desensitizing them on the ground first. They did great!! One, sniffed and nudged it (Galan, Andalusian), another actually kicked it (Itzel, Quarter), and the third, nudged it repeatedly until the wind pushed it back to him and ran off bucking and farting (Toro, Quarter).

A couple more introductions to the ball and I finally rode Toro. Roberto, my oldest rode Itzel. We decided to play a friendly first time game with our friend Melissa and her mare, Lucy. She kicked out butts. I'm not obsessed with winning, but I do believe in healthy competition so I have devised a weekly plan for further training with the ball. And by next week - I WILL WIN!!!

I'm not obsessed with winning anymore, I don't think. After-all, I'm all grown up now, right? ;P
